Who
        My name is Ben Dulaney and on February 12th I received an invitation to join the Peace Corps in Botswana. I’m a Biology major with an Anthropology minor from Carroll College.
What
        While there I will be serving as a Health Capacity Volunteer in an HIV/AIDS clinic. I would tell you more, but I honestly don’t know. When I ask the currently volunteers what I might be doing they just say that it depends. Every site is different and every position unique in it’s own way. This is both slightly terrifying and wonderfully exciting.
Where
        Botswana Africa! Yeah crazy right. If you have no clue where that is just remember where South Africa is and it’s the country just north.
When
        Below you can see my timeline of events leading up till now. More officially I will be leaving on July 25th for Philadelphia. There I will begin staging and leave for Botswana a few days later.

Scheduled Interview- Dec. 6th 2018
Original interview date- Dec. 17th 2018 (Postponed due to mandatory meeting)
Rescheduled interview date- Jan. 3rd 2019 (Postponed due to Government shutdown. Grrrrr)
Government reopens!- Jan. 25th 2019
Rescheduled interview date- Feb. 1st 2019
Invitation- Feb. 12th 2019 3:20pm
Medical Clearance- April 29th
Legal Clearance- April 30th

What to expect
           Updates
This is going to be where I update friends and family on what I’m doing and how things are going. These will be more long form posts or transcripts from the podcast I will be doing.

Yes, I’m doing a podcast! This will be my primary way to update people on what I’m doing, but I also want it to be more than just about me. This podcast is about the Peace Corps and educating people on what this organization stands for. I want to have stories, interviews, and how does one go about joining the Peace Corps. The first episode will be posted later this month.

Clever name right? Photography has been a huge part of my life for the past 2 years and I have no intention of stopping while in country. Even better this will give me the chance to explore photography in a way like never before. It will be daily updates and stories of the people around me.

            I often like to have control in my life. When I plan a trip with friends, I’m the one planning on an Excel spreadsheet, the food we’re going to buy and what recipes to use. "Try and avoid the elephants"

9/7/19            There seems to be a lot of tradition when it comes to Peace Corps. Tradition that leaves you wondering why you’re standing in the middle of a room with a blind fold on and a camera going off. No this was not a gender reveal party, or a scene from 50 shades of grey but rather the announcement for where we will be living and serving for the next two years. Imagine 49 confused and slightly helpless soon to be volunteers standing over a map that’s been tapped to the ground. Suddenly everyone is told to take of their masks for the big reveal! Annndd! “Wait where is this again?”            Moments before removing the blindfold I was still not sure how I would react. I was told that I’d be up in the north, but what does that mean exactly? I wasn’t sure whether I should shout, cry or laugh because I had no clue what I would be getting with my site. A commentary on the spread and perception of the Coronavirus(COVID-19) from an American volunteer in Botswana

            Looking out over a large conference room I can see the pained expression of the bridge workers searching my words for answers. What started as a simple health talk about how to protect yourself from the Coronavirus has now devolved into a lengthy discussion about the origins of the Coronavirus and quarantine procedures for Botswana. Their eyes rest on the brink of fear not knowing when the virus will come to Botswana, nor if they are healthy enough to survive it. I am not an expert. I am a 23-year-old Peace Corps volunteer living in a village in the Northern District of Botswana. I hold nothing more than a bachelor’s in biology and 7 months as a volunteer in country.
